White Coat Ceremony

On August 12, I received my white coat from Yale School of Medicine. I am still amazed and wonder how I got here, but everyone makes it a point to remind us that this is no mistake; we were chosen to be here. I am so thankful for this opportunity and hope to become the best physician possible for my future patients.

First Week of Summer Rotation

So, I have decided to attend Yale School of Medicine. I am still in awe that I was even accepted here, but I am grateful for the opportunity. On June 10, I started a summer research rotation in a chemistry lab. I will admit, it is a little challenging. I am working on something that I have never worked on before, but I am excited to be pushed to my limits. I also did not expect to be doing this exact thing for my PhD, but I am actually loving what I am doing. :) (Just to be clear, I am doing MD/PhD, so this rotation is for me to get a feel for the lab culture and the type of work that I would be doing.)

Also, New Haven, CT is a lot different from what I imagined. I originally did not have Yale at the top of my list because I wanted to be in a big city. I was aiming for New York, Chicago, or Boston. I was accepted to multiple schools in NY and Chicago, but none in Boston. After attending second look at schools in NY and the polar vortex in Chicago, I realized a big city may not be the best for me. New Haven, CT is the perfect mix of a small town with a big city feel. Plus, it is smack in the middle of two of the big cities I was looking at. I am so glad that I opened my eyes to this institution.

I say all of this to say that your criteria may change when looking at schools. Be open to those changes. I am so glad that I was open-minded about the schools I decided to apply to. Some schools were perfect in some areas and lacking in others. Other schools were not a great fit at all. If you have the chance, apply to a couple of schools that you may not have thought of. You may be presently surprised, just as I was. Good luck to everyone applying this cycle. This will be a challenging time and will test you to no end, but I wish all of you the best :)
